So many of the rhymes we sing and dance to as children come from the Old World. “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush” is another one to add to the list, first recorded in England in the 1800s, though it had already been around for generations when it was first written down.
An earlier version of the tune was about dancing around a bramble bush, but apparently the alliteration and lack of triplet rhythm led to that being abandoned in favor of the mulberry. Horticulturists the world over probably bristle when they heard the revised lyric, though, because mulberries grow on trees, not bushes.
Why not a raspberry bush? Or blueberry? Or strawberry? The list of three-syllable berries that grow on actual bushes is long, so why go with the mulberry? The mystery remains unsolved.
“Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush” Playing Tips
6/8 time may be my favorite time signature. There’s just something about a good triplet that I can’t resist. If you plan to dive into folk music traditions, you will be seeing a lot of it as 6/8 time is the time signature of choice for jigs.
If you are unfamiliar with how 6/8 time functions and sounds in practice, be sure to check out my articles on time signatures and rhythm syllables. “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush,” like most children’s songs in 6/8, has a lot of space between notes rather than being wall-to-wall triplets, but the basic principles of the time signature still apply.
Low G and High G Variations
I’ve included both a low G and a high G version of “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush” below. The low G version features a key change the second time through the tune, jumping from C up to G – the key that the high G sheet music uses.
When you learn a melody, it is great practice to try moving it around the different keys. Figuring out how to play a song that you already know somewhere else on the neck is a first step to learning to play unfamiliar tunes by ear – a wonderful skill to have in your back pocket.
Since jumping to a different key isn’t easy without leaving first position on a uke in high G tuning, I included a second verse of the song in that sheet music. Due to the lyrics, the second verse has a slightly different rhythmic pattern to the notes the for a bit of practice on that end of things.
